[edit]Aha! I see the Mistley towers are squaring up to kick Anne Bracegirdle off the front page, have you no shame?--Bishonen | Talk 16:34, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- You're not serious, I hope? Kids don't get the dreaded m-word just like that, no cause for worry, I trust. I'm sorry you feel bad, I hope it's just one of those famous champaigne migraines, and will fade with the day.--Bishonen | Talk 17:19, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Mistley Towers

[edit]Oh, meningitis, since you mention a teenager and breathing. I'm glad I misunderstood. Anne Bracegirdle is still holding the fort on the Main Page, I see! Wait till your towers replace her, then it'll be their turn to get edited by all passers-by. I think it's her picture being there that draws the crowds. What's a "piece de toute droit"? Unfortunately I'm not familiar with these ancien regime expressions. Something to do with droit de seigneur, perhaps. Have fun, feel better, sorry about all the champaigne.--Bishonen | Talk 20:58, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Well, I thought you'd noticed her since you commented on the template posted about her on my Talk. Of course the Towers will arrive there, the only question is whether they'll use the picture: that depends totally on whether other simultaneous contributors have also offered pics. What happened to John Vanbrugh? How very à propos you ask! I just had a spat with Raul on the subject, check out his proposal here for recycling the most interesting articles in preference to using the dime-a-dozen type articles. Well, I e-mailed you about that a while back. The aproposness is that I reopened the subject just a few hours ago with a note directly to Raul, asking if the message was correct that I was getting from the fact that he wasn't answering questions, and he didn't appreciate my "accusatory tone". He's not used to it, I'm sure. I just wanted to know, actually, I couldn't see any other way than to ask and put it very directly (the people who didn't do that didn't get any replies at all). Of course I didn't mention JV, but it was that that I had in mind. I don't care about Restoration comedy.--Bishonen | Talk 23:42, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, yes, stand on the sidelines and snigger, that's fine. That must have been the first time I created a cat, when was yours? I really didn't think it would work, it seemed deeply mysterious and at the same time much too simple.--Bishonen | Talk 23:46, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Looking for Restoration plays seems a waste of modesty and kindness, why don't you spend the time reading Colley Cibber instead, if it's penance you want, and let me know what you think of it. (I got tired of seeing the redlink to Anne Bracegirdle in that, that's the only reason I did a modest page on her.)--Bishonen | Talk 11:17, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Request for comment
[edit]Hi, Wet, Geogre, and Giano, please excuse a three-person multi-user message or microspam. In case you made a New Year's resolution to help the harrassed, I just thought you might want to redeem it by taking a look at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Chan Han Xiang and, less importantly, Chan Han Xiang's retaliatory RfC Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Gtabary. I don't know the principals, never had speech with or saw them around (maybe Geogre did on VfD) but it's not getting a lot of attention--a little more after I asked dab to take a look this morning (European morning)--and I can't help but feel sorry for the guy who tried to help a countryman and fell through into the fourth dimension. We all know what even much milder cases of that feel like, and this user doesn't seem to have much of a wiki support network. Well, that's how it looks to me, but you'll form your own opinion, if you should feel like making this your good deed of the day. Best wishes,--Bishonen | Talk 15:26, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Giacom'. User:Edward is up for adminship on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship, in case you want to go vote for him, for being in the same boat with you! [edit]You're a hoot, Drac, remember how we both said the exact same thing when John Vanbrugh was on FAC, and then Palladian architecture? There's always this delay time. If you're not careful I'll share some indigenuos Sami folk saying about how the skis never glide smoothly first thing out of the hut. Oh, yes, I will. You can run but you can't hide.--Bishonen | Talk 12:44, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- There's a real purty picture of the insides of York House here, don't know if you're interested. The date is a little off (1759, but maybe they just got it wrong), and I guess it would in any case really be Norfolk House that you'd want. Decorative, though.--Bishonen | Talk 13:56, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Baroque Collaboration of the Week
[edit]Please help bring this stub to Featured article standard!--Bishonen | Talk 00:13, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- On which were hung sheets of decorated parchment? Sheets of Restoration comedy, you mean. You won't believe this, Dracula: German wikipedians like culture articles, unlike around here. John Vanbrugh and several others have been translated, check it out! Apparently, when an article exists in another language version, there's a heading "other languages" below "toolbox" on the left, just click on "Deutsch"! I don't set up for a judge of German, but the translations look very good to me. I wrote to the translator, who has replied on my Talk page. Apparently he/she is picking them from the Featured article page.--Bishonen | Talk 08:54, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Hello
[edit]Hi there - yes, I am still around. I was quite busy at work before Christmas, and then took an extended break over Christmas and the New Year, popping back here occasionally. I'm still officially "taking a wikivacation" because I'm not able to give WP the time it deserves: I'm beginning to think that this may become a permanent state of affairs, and I will always be a WP dilettante... -- ALoan (Talk) 12:15, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I've taken a couple of breaks before, but always come back and would like to improve Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams after I finish The Cantos, so we'll see. But I am a bit depressed with the legalism that seems to be rampant here at the moment and the American/Christian/ Right-wing/Pop culture mindsets that tend to dominate; and then you have the idiots who know nothing and edit everything. Oh well. What are you working on now? Filiocht 11:03, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)
- Enjoy your stay in the belly of the beast! I'm Irish, but I drink very little and do not have red hair, so where does that leave me? Looks like you have a new FA to add to your list, anyway. And a fine article it is, too. I'm off home now. Filiocht 16:26, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)
Gosh, Giano, I always thought old European aristocracy was a specialty of yours, I even had some idea that Mme de Staël might be one of your ancienne maitresses. Well, thence the huge bells, perhaps. Remember her collection of those lovely Palladian artefacts?--Bishonen | Talk 21:03, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you're bored in a boring place, and the jetlag/no sleeping thing must be a horror. Why not amuse yourself by writing me a clever e-mail, or go on Peer review and get yourself karma for helping out. Or of course, edit our budding new art FA, help build Wikipedia. (Remember no cats.) If you do it first, I'll put in some more tomorrow. --Bishonen | Talk 23:22, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Congratulations. Filiocht 13:23, Jan 13, 2005 (UTC)
Matty did OK, didn't he!
[edit]Matthew Brettingham did OK! The translated John Vanbrugh is now on some sort of "Review" page at the German wiki, and the translator expresses plans for nominating it as a Featured Article Candidate next. :-) I'm betting it'll be on the de.wikipedia's Main Page before it's on ours.--Bishonen | Talk 03:56, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Wanted
[edit]Oh, there you are, Monte Christo, fantastic. I was about ready to send out a Wanted alert. You actually edited the German John Vanbrugh? That I have to see. I'll go look. My German is up to reading only, and that's on a good day. It takes me an hour to compose a four-word sentence with an auxiliary verb in it. You have to take a look at this link (same as above), last entry on the page, see how happy the translator was to hear from Bishonen! Go on, fill his/her cup to overflowing, let 'em hear from Conte Giacomo, too.--Bishonen | Talk 07:54, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Cantos
[edit]Thanks for the kind words. I'm currently lost in the world of medieval philosophy on the relationship between light, love, sight and the divine mind. If you find anything in an airport bookshop, let me know!. My own library is the fruit of long hours in secondhand bookshops combined with the generosity of my fellow poets.
You do not read The Cantos for fun, believe me, but they are interesting for a person with my tastes, and historically important. By the way, Pound preferred Romanesque buildings to Baroque on the grounds that the latter represented an abandonment of the world of intellectual clarity and light/brightness for a set of valuse that centred around hell and the increasing dominance of society by bankers, a breed he despised. I wonder what your archetictural opinion of this is? Filiocht 10:11, Jan 14, 2005 (UTC)
- It's worth remembering that Pound was kept in a mental hospital for 13 years! Now you know why. Filiocht 10:40, Jan 14, 2005 (UTC)
- I note you're still not sleeping properly given that you are here at what must be 5:00 or so there? I bet you'll be glad to get home, anyway. Filiocht 11:01, Jan 14, 2005 (UTC)

Oh, go categorize yourself. You put a stub template on that page, expecting other people to do your work for you and fill it out, didn't you? I'm quite busy enough adding content to some lovely baroque pages. I've spent the last ten hours detailing Erich von Däniken's alien visitation theory in explanation of the remarkable, though superficial, resemblance of the Blenheim holder to a modern toilet roll holder, 200 years before the epoch-making invention of the toilet roll itself. Why don't you go do something equally useful, instead of keeping up this insulting and distressing barrage?--Bishonen | Talk 16:07, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC) (PS: especially since I've been trying to save this for 30 minutes now!) (Actually it turned into more like 90 minutes.)

- Thanks, glad you liked it--the e-mail contribution I got needed a little de-academizing, so that's what I did. We don't want to activate people's automatic suspicion of academia, or have them guffaw at explicit words, but on the contrary to see (either the door or the wall), and to rethink their own prurient sniggering at these subjects. Did you notice my reference for it, pursuant to a hint of yours? :-) --Bishonen | Talk 07:46, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I totally agree, you'd better put in your Freud, I think I'm done for today. I've just expanded the account of the Palladian tph with the true story of how one of them changed the course of European history and scared Queen Elizabeth I off the idea of making you Brits half-Swedes. Y'all might today have been wearing wigs made of polar bear pelt in the High Court if it hadn't been for Palladio.--Bishonen | Talk 13:59, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

So is Auntie Olga the same person as Ma Di Dracula in Alabama? That would make her about 110 years old, but, heck, why not.11:34, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Yeah!! What Giano said! And dedicated hoaxers will become tired and leave too! And furthermore, protecting the Main Page article would avert such horrible humiliations as having Restoration comedy on the Main page, unprotected, and hardly get it vandalized at all! (Actually for technical reasons it was protected for part of the day, but that's neither here nor there.) Even vandals don't give a piss about my obscure plays—yeah, I needed to know that! Not!--Bishonen | Talk 12:52, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Dear Mrs di Dracula, I do apologize for offending you. I was attempting in my uncouth way to pay your esteemed twin sister a compliment, and celebrate her wonderful stamina in being as young at heart as ever at, as I supposed, 110 years of age. Please understand that I am of a primitive, nomadic culture, we follow the reindeer herds and hear little of the great world, and indeed have a poor grasp of those aristocratic manners and culture so wonderfully represented by your sister and yourself. Do tell me, has your sister left any unusual artefacts in your keeping? From the old country? A research project which Count D and I have undertaken is in desperate need of pictures—drawings, photographs, anything—of our wonderful subject (which is however neither novelty items nor sex toys!). Il conte will inform you further, when he thaws out. --Bishonen | Talk 20:39, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hey, which is it, 155 yards or 50 metres? Are the other metres (Blue Drawing Room 21 meters) right?--Bishonen | Talk 11:15, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Very well, if you insist, I won't move that page today. The new Ceremonies section brought a fit of hysterical weeping rather than just a tear. It will be my pleasure to introduce a few erections there, and end on the consolation of being able to admire the manured gardens. Of course you realize the whole article is a bit of a tease, with all those gorgeous fitments and appointments always hinting at, yet never fully confronting, the question of tph's. Bishonen | Talk 19:47, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Hey, it looks like jeffmedkeff deleted your paragraph about the Beatles smoking pot amongst the gorgeous bathroom fitments, did you notice? I think it was probably an edit conflict accident, as you guys saved just one minute apart (=in practice, probably pressed Save simultaneously). I'll put it back, shall I? Maybe you'd better check that nothing else untoward happened. --Bishonen | Talk 21:03, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I have put the Beatles back. You want to have a think about how to capitalize the names for the rooms? Compare the green drawing room, The Green Drawing Room, or the Green Drawing Room. I don't much like the middle one, but it's not like it matters. Checking if the latest guide book has a consistent system and going with that might be the simplest. Oh, and I know FAC voters will nag about having all measurements in both yards and metres, but it's the kind of thing they'll enjoy fixing up themselves, I say we let 'em get on with it. --Bishonen | Talk 21:46, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Doing the shakey shakey rep
[edit]Oh, those copyedits to the Shakey Lead look good, don't they? It's a pity people feel it necessary to write rude edit summaries, I suppose, but it's no big deal. Anyway, that Lead needs more than just a massage, I've got it decomposing in a text editor already. Oh, and I saw, when you changed it back, that Churchill is on her right, of course. P.S. "Including one who wished to propose marriage to Princess Anne, he was declared insane"? All right, funny man, that's quite enough anti-royalist sentiment out of you. Bishonen | Talk 14:12, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Just realized BP has the Royal Family, the Royal family, and the royal family, you got any preference? I like the last, but that could be my bolshevism.--Bishonen | Talk 14:59, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Totally agree about royal family, I'll do a quick run-through for that later, dangerously many people seem to be editing the article right now! Please let me have your thoughts also on "parliament" versus "Parliament", I think probably the second. And please note something crook about the very last sentence, I don't quite know what to do there.--Bishonen | Talk 15:45, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- It's "Royal Family" (as in British Royal Family) and "Parliament". Proteus (Talk) 17:29, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Technically and properly it's "The Queen", but "the Queen" is also common. Proteus (Talk) 18:06, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- What you've done seems like the best way to me (except perhaps that the "HM" to start with probably isn't necessary, and certainly isn't worth keeping if it produces negative comments on WP:FAC, which it probably would), and calling her "The Queen" subsequently is perfecly reasonable - if the Duke of Wellington were mentioned, we could call him "the Duke of Wellington" initially and "the Duke" subsequently, and this is very similar. Proteus (Talk) 19:37, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Buckingham Palace
[edit]Hi there -
- re explicit dates: no problem - having done the research and found the links I thought it was worth putting the exact dates in; however, given that the other incidents only have a year, leaving out the day and month is fine. I think names, where they are known, are rather important, so I am glad you have left them in.
- I had noticed the piped "fathers4justice|single fathers" link and thought it was a very good solution. I have sympathy too: the system seems to be very broken.
- FAC: I think it is almost ready. If length is a going to be problem, part can always be spun out to, say History of Buckingham Palace. I know, you don't want it atomised, but that is what summary style is all about.
- Capital letters: I think rooms ought to be capitalised: they are the rooms' Proper Names. I think the Queen should be "the Queen" (Her Majesty (or HM) the Queen the first time). Capitalised "The" seems a bit OTT, but I won't object.
Your (and Bishonen's) articles are always so interesting. -- ALoan (Talk) 12:40, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Picture of the (John) Day
[edit]Hi, Giano. Thanks for the support on John Day. I'm still a tiny bit concerned about the picture--if you get a chance, would you mind going to the article and clinking on the picture (which should take you to the original, un-thumb-ified version). Do you see the original or not? PRiis 03:30, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

"Read only" imminent
[edit]OK. No, I haven't done anything, I've been out. I'm leaving it to PRiis to take stock of, when he looks in. Wikipedia will go "Read only" in ten minutes or so, according to Jamesday (developer), and stay like that for 20 minutes (yeah, that'll be the best-case scenario, I guess). So, now is not a good time to start any big-ass editing. Piping hot IRC info just for you, Drac. Bishonen | Talk 15:06, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

This article is slowly getting better and better - the main withstanding critique is the lack of information on architecture, for which the city is famous. Bishonen suggested at Peer Review that I "rope you in", as an architecture buff, to do some work on it - if you get any time this would be greatly appreciated. --Oldak Quill 12:51, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

April 1

- It's no achievement of mine, indeed, never entered my head. User:Jguk, a fan of the toilet paper holder page, simply edited the "template"—the FA almanac that only Raul is supposed to edit—and put it in. Ta bu shi da yu added the image. And Jguk told me about it on IRC yesterday. Raul was there too, and threw up his hands in despair and said he'd protect the almanac template, but he doesn't seem to have gotten round to removing the art objects yet. Maybe he won't bother until he's got an April 1 proposal of his own. Anyway, the conclusion from all this: get the Sicilian mafia to set you up an IRC client, you'll never work again! :-) And also, the user you least want to meet doesn't come there (socialize, him?). - Well, that was fast :) Pcpcpc has removed the libel, and now simply states he will henceforth ignore all of our posts. I've checked his recent edits and he doesn't seem to talk a lot to other users on talk pages, so I guess we're ok for now. Radiant! 22:31, Mar 3, 2005 (UTC)
Ignore Lists
[edit]You know. I like this idea of ignore lists. I think all wikipedia talk pages should have them. And you know who I would put on all those ingnore lists. Xtra 08:08, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Benjy
[edit]I gotta concur with your reviewer on the talk page, Benjy's looking great! And isn't it wonderful not to have to disfigure the page with all the fussy royalty and nobility titles, and then have people nitpick at them, I mean at Them? Bishonen | Talk 09:53, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Risen?
[edit]I believe the word is "rocketed" :-). I beg to differ, I think Benjy's ready for the big time, but you need a pic of him. There's always a lot of flak if a biography doesn't have a portrait. Is there anything in a book you could scan or photograph? Bishonen | Talk 13:52, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Yes (and yes of course you are), I think I've seen the tiny collage portrait: comes up when you do a Google image search including his middle name, right? Not a lot of use, that. :-( I'm surprised there isn't a proper image on the web. Is there some alternative spelling of the name that might help? Bishonen | Talk 14:12, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Benjy again
[edit]Way cool additions! I've done a small fiddle, I'm done, but do you have the days and months for Benjie's birth/decease? There's a standard way of laying that out for bios, take a look at Colley Cibber's dates, I'm pretty sure I imitated some suitable model there.
Your second--middle--reference seems to be both 1929 and 1950, what's up with that? Bishonen | Talk 22:00, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
The Italian What?
[edit]Is this you indulging in overstatement again, or do you really have four legs? The Irish pony
- Some anon over on my talk page is making rude remarks about women and horses; do you know anything about this? The Spanish person seemed to be saying that only women should be able to decide which women went into women categories, or something like that. And this in the name of ending sexism, I believe. Who says that Americans are the ones who lack a sense of irony? I was very pleased with the comments on the cantos on FAC, I must say. Trying not to get a big head, but I do love flattery. Filiocht 15:38, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism User:DaveTheRed
[edit]I just reverted yet another vandalism to Dave's userpage, that you reverted before, and asked an admin on IRC to block the vandal (same IP as you reverted). This is probably a user with multiple IPs, though, and the same who vandalised Dave under another IP early this morning. Oh, and having taken a look at [4], I'm guessing it's somebody closely related to Kaneda... sigh... too many bastards in this place. Since I've written a blocking threat on 204.112.169.4's talk page, and then followed through and actually gotten them blocked, I am looking forward quite confidently to getting my own page vandalised real soon, with some clever barb. Well, so what, who cares. -Bishonen | Talk 16:47, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

We might even get that category expert friend of ours to join in. But meanwhile, check out this page, look at the foot of the page: see how that cat is itself a member of Category:New Zealand people? If you put Ben both as member of the child cat, as he properly is, and of the parent cat, you're turning him into, uh, his own uncle. You're not in the Appalachians now! - Hmm. So Gadfium's snooping around my pages, huh? :) Coincidentally, a friend of mine used to live in a house that F.W. Petre designed, so I've definitely got a couple of photos of that somewhere. I'll have to have a hunt around to see what else I've got of his buildings, but I can always take a couple more if you like. Give me a few days and I'll see what I can come up with. Oh, and I didn't notice - is there a redirect to that page from F.W.Petre? That's how he's usually referred to in Dunedin, at least. And a good "further reading" reference to add to both that page and any others on Dunedin architects is the book "Buildings of Dunedin" by H. Knight and N. Featured article on Intoxication
[edit]Nobody doubts that you'd be the perfect author for that undertaking. You might want to start by merging Intoxication and Drunkenness (a much longer article), as requested on the pages. Be warned, though: the merge itself may look easy, but it'll create thousands (I think quite possibly literally) of double and triple redirects, that you'd also be expected to fix. Francis Petre quoting style
[edit]You want the italics for the quotes, Drac? It's standard in some countries—Poland, I think—but unfamiliar and weird to Americans. And, well, to me. See Village pump discussion here, where everybody's against it. OK if I change it to regular double quotes? Bishonen|talk 05:18, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

More on Petre
[edit]I've had a look and made a few very minor alterations, particularly to the format - placing of photos, etc, but also a tiny bit of the wording here and there. Nothing major. Have a look and see what you think. Grutness|hello? 04:38, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi Giano - you wrote: I had been meaning to ask you why Dunedin expanded so fast and quickly.
- The gold rush was what did it - Dunedin went from 2000 people in 1860 to 20,000 in 1865. And then the first ever frozen meat exports left from Dunedin's port in the 1870s. By the 1920s the population was up to 75,000.
I'm not a 100% sure about the new picture layout, bit I suppose it looks tidier
- I just wasn't that happy with the text weaving in and out of it, and pictures breaking through the headings.
I think the next one should be an architectural appraisal of Dunedin. looking for Petre's stuff has unearthed some other interesting buildings.
- There are a lot of them here. I wrote the articles on the Dunedin Railway Station and 'Larnach Castle, two of the city's gems. I don't know whether it's possible to get hold of a copy of the Knight and Wales book where you are, but if you can it's well worth it if you want an overview of the city's buildings.
I'll never get my toungue around English, I thought it was on an Island now it's in. I think its done to trip the rest of us up!
- :) NZ's use of the words for th two islands is a bit unusual. A rough rule of thumb seems to be that if it's small enough to still feel like an island you'd use "on" - if it's big enough to feel like a country then it tends to be "in".

Petre picture
[edit]Hi Giano - one of my skills is photo retouching... I've had a go at getting rid of the worst of the marks and scratches on the portrait of Francis Petre, and uploaded the result as Image:Frank Petre2.jpg. I haven't added it to the article, but if you think it's better than the one that's there, then please do so! :) Grutness|hello? 11:47, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Van the Man
[edit]Yes, so immature, what a childish contrast to the vroom-vroom guy at Automobiles of Italy, I hope he doesn't get himself banned or something. I'm delighted to see what you're doing with Blenheim. Too soon for me to mess up your national heritage punctuation yet, I suppose? Funnily enough I'm giving Van the Man some attention myself too, some molecule-level cruft, see User:Bishonen/Première of Vanbrugh's Relapse. It needs to reuse some material already distributed over other articles, Restoration comedy and similar, so right now I'm mainly fussing over that, trying to reword plagiarisms (of my own texts) into unrecognizability. It's not even a lot about the 1696 première performance as such—nothing is known about that, except it was a big hit and the leading man was drunk—it's about the casting problems before the première. I'll match any Pokemon article point for point on the score of meaningless detail! The cruftiest stuff isn't in yet. It's pointless effort, though. I'll never be able to find portraits of any of the people involved, or any other useful pics, and there's one more big problem with the material (don't know if you can guess what, keep it to yourself if you do). Anyway, frantically busy today, typing from inside a meeting, practically. No more wiki till tonight at the earliest. Bishonen | talk 10:40, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Tell me if this is outside your area of interest, but I've had this one on a slow burner for a while. Van the Cat
[edit]Heh. A Vanbrugh category, what a noble thought, Giano. Should we do that? Seriously? OK, if you're up for it, post a yes on my page and I'll create Category:John Vanbrugh and parent it to Category:English dramatists and playwrights and Category:English architects. I'll put it into articles John Vanbrugh and The Relapse. (And into my new article later, but not while it's still a userpage, they're not supposed to have cats.) You put it into all existing articles on houses by Vanbrugh, and wherever else you can think of. Then we sit back and wait for it to hit Wikipedia:Categories for deletion.--Bishonen | talk 18:13, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Van the Cat now exists, hurry up and attach it to those babies (the houses), I think it's more likely to be put up for deletion while it remains empty! --Bishonen | talk 19:46, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I was going to comment on WP:FAC until I saw that you had decided not to address any more of Mark1's comments. Since my comment duplicates one of his, it seems redundant to make it there but I am too self-righteous to let it go. The phrase that had attracted my attention is "This is only a fraction of the true story, the truth is", which seems redundant at best. You already allude to the brief and partial (in both senses) nature of the plaque inscription and I find the phrase more appropriate to a magazine feature than an encyclopedia article. I recognise that I am picking a nit off an excellent article. --Theo (Talk) 15:37, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Montacute House edits
[edit]I liked them on the left and right also. It was User:Alphax who moved them to the right. Did you see why I glued the first three words of that paragraph together? It avoided the problem where you could squeeze the page and end up with a column containing only the word "The"; three words seemed like the right compromise. Do you feel like reverting the change? [Furthermore, I just found a browser width that has the first two images side by side with a narrow column of text to the left; no improvement. If you want to stack images vertically you have to revert to a div or a table]

[edit]Hi Giano - two features in two months! I'm impressed! Who's next, Robert Lawson? Grutness...wha? 12:43, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I probably have some photos - if not I could take some. Lawson's buildings are very prominent around Dunedin. Grutness...wha? 23:39, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I haven't had a chance to look at the article start yet (the real world is being a problem!) but finding "the best one or two" could be difficult - Lawson is a far better known name here for architecture than Petre, and did more important buildings in Dunedin! Larnach Castle, the Municipal Chambers, First Church, Knox Church, Otago Boys' High School... by sheer coincidence, I was in the town of Oamaru (120 km north of here) on Tuesday, and I took some photos, possibly for use on the Oamaru article. One of them shows the Forrester Art Gallery, another fine Lawson building! Grutness...wha? 07:11, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Well done. Sorry I was away on the day. Filiocht | Blarneyman 07:13, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I don't think I ever told you I e-mailed User:Pcpcpc after he left (well, officially left), offering to watchlist his pages and help him keep them the way he obviously wanted them, i. e. clean? I felt sorry for him, would you believe, for falling foul of Irate. (So I have spoken to him, voluntarily even, since January. Oh, oh, what would my mother say?) He didn't trouble to reply, and I see I'm again honoured with a hiss from him, as are you. Never mind, this is a person who makes no distinction between SlimVirgin (!) and Irate (!). R.A.Lawson
[edit]Hi Giano - I've had a bit of a play around with the draft lawson article. It still needs a lot of work, of course, but I think I've made a few improvements. A couple of ponts: 1) First Church is always simply called First Church. I think that presbyterians don't have cathedrals, but call their principal churches "first churches". 2) There is a lot on Lawson in the "Buildings of Dunedin" book, some of which should fit quite nicely into the article. 3) If the weather is fine tomorrow I hope to take a few photos! 4) As for a private house, I'd suggest the one Lawson built for Watson Shennan at 367 High Street, Dunedin.
When the article goes up properly, by the way, I'd suggest calling it Robert Lawson (architect) - one of his relations (also Robert Arthur Lawson, but usually known as Robbie Lawson) plays cricket for Otago and could possibly get an article at some stage. It would probably also be worth having a redirect from R. A. Lawson, since that's how the architect is normally known here in NZ.
I also see you've been talking with Donovan - believe it or not, I know him fairly well: we did postgraduate work together here at Otago University, and shared an office for three years! Grutness...wha? 05:04, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- There seems to be some confusion on the internet as to whether he actually designed Larnach Castle, one site says it was designed "overseas"
According to my books on the subject there is some doubt, but the Buildings of Dunedin book is most likely to accurate (I'd trust Hardwicke Knight's word on most things to do with Dunedin history), and that says "There is some doubt about R A Lawson's part in the design of... Larnach Castle. There is a tradition that larnach designed it after Castle Forbes, his father's place in Australia. The plans, however, are unquestionably from Lawson's office and the contractors... worked under his supervision." Discovering Dunedin tells a slightly different version, saying "Plans for the castle were drawn up overseas, but carried out [by] R.A.Lawson". Oh, and Dunedin does have 120,000 people, so it is a bit of a coincidence that Donovan and I are both working on similar articles on Wikipedia! Grutness...wha? 08:21, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
R.A.Lawson Images
[edit]Giano, here are some images of the castle that I found lying around, so I put them on the commons:
If you would like me to edit the exterior further (like tighter cropping or adjusted levels), then just ask. James would have more trouble getting images of the castle, because of the extortionate entrance fee.
Oh, hi James. At least you got out while you were still ahead (or, at least, not as far behind ;). (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 11:33, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
thank you everybody
[edit]I would like to express my thanks to everybody helping in the nomination of Antarctic krill. I think 3 1/2 supports and a long long discussion are an unexpected and great outcome for a critter so remote and unknown - you should see how little and poor Antarctic krill is represented in Encarta and Britannica - this is the best reviewed and resourced general article of krill we know of - it is impossible to fullfill all wishes at the same time - this is what we did with our all product peer review stamp to qualify this stage of the article for academic exercises, especially for our dreams of a Virtual university within Wikiversity - good luck to you all Uwe Kils 21:48, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

RFA
[edit]I am sorry that you find my concern for User:Boothy443 distasteful. I may have misunderstood you just as I feel that you have misunderstood me. I have asked him/her if there is an issue with which I can help. I cannot ask privately because s/he does not accept email. I did consider leaving the question unasked because I was one of the affected nominations but I concluded that this would be inappropriate because I would ask such a question were I an independent observer. I hope that this allays your distaste. Ultimately, however, I feel that your discomfort is much milder than Boothy's. I regret yours but I am worried about his/hers.—Theo (Talk) 23:14, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
PS: For me, the issue here is not that Boothy opposed any one RFA; that could be for a reason specific to the individual editor and it is anybody's perogative to explain an individual opinion to any extent that they wish. The blanket opposition, however, to me indicates a broader distress/rage/hostility that I would be uncaring to ignore.—Theo (Talk) 23:20, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for your extensive explanation. I understand your position. I recognise the possibility that my intervention was inappropriate. I had not seen it as bullying and if even one outsider sees it as such then the odds are good that the subject feels that way. I had hoped that my intervention made it clear that I was trying to allay a hurt rather than solicit information. I can see that I failed.—Theo (Talk) 07:36, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Copied from TheoClarke's talk page:
- I just wanted to make clear that in no way was I bullying or intimidating Boothy. When I posted my first comment, I was unaware that other people had already asked the same question- I simply did not think that a relatively current issue would be in the archives (stupid me!). However, I have already apologized to Boothy for re-asking this question, and want to make clear that I simply wanted to help Boothy by making him aware of (what we consider) an RfA standard. However, now that I have read his archive page, I completely understand his views. I have always respected everyone's opinions; after all, a plethora of diverse opinions is integral for Wikipedia! Sorry for any misunderstandings I might have caused, and thank you all for your dedication to Wikipedia. I hope this matter is now closed. Flcelloguy Give me a note! Desk 14:34, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- P.S. I completely understand and respect your views, I just want to reiterate that when I first posted the comment to Boothy, I was 1) trying to help him and 2) unaware that previous Wikipedians had asked him already. Thank you very much for your understanding! Flcelloguy Give me a note! Desk 14:34, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

response from London
[edit]Uwe wants to share this with you (from his talk page):
Hello Kils
[edit]Just would like to state that i have very much enjoyed being involved in a project of this nature. To see the speed of co-operation between various people was (Uwe, Lupo and Salleman and all others) fantastic. It was a complete buzz to go off researching about a scientific subject and coming to some understanding and appreciation of a creature that i would have no knowledge or interest in otherwise. I would like to say that it takes a damn good teacher to get others interested in what they teach and i for one, if only in a rudimentary and general way have found the subject of Krill and sorrounding issues of ecology and environment fascinating. I think that says a lot about your willingness to let others participate in something which you obviously have great knowledge in and could easily have been a lot less humble with. At some point i will put up some informtion on my home page so at least people know a little more about me. Am going to try to extend the article on Ice-algae so any info you may have would be good. I hope the article on Antartic Krill gets featured as i think it is now very good.
Wikiversity sounds like a good idea but will need more time to go through the proposal (not too sure what help i could be).
Once again thanks Uwe! Yakuzai 22:50, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
