Did You Know A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on October 9, 2013.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the design of the Mission Valley Viaduct on Interstate 805 was inspired by the Mission San Diego de Alcala and recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers?

Why is this road marked Interstate 805 and not Interstate 508?

[edit]

Nothing is mentioned about this idea in the text.

As I-5 is a north and south road and not east and west road. It seems more logical to make the present I-805, which is a north and south detour or alternate to I-5 to have a number that reflected the relationship between the I-805 and I-5 rather than to the I-8. That would make the present I-805 into I-508 or I-50X. I-8 has no other related 3 digit branches anywhere along it's length so there would be no conflict if there were spurs, bypasses, connectors, etc. on the existing I-8. Has anyone ever came up with an explanation for this anomaly? Michou 13 (talk) 17:19, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing is mentioned about it in the text because we'd need a source for the idea that some other number was considered.
Since I-805 begins and ends at I-5, so it functions as a bypass for I-5, it was numbered as an auxiliary of I-5. There's nothing anomalous about this situation at all. Imzadi 1979  20:01, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
